Second Place East operates an emergency shelter which is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Emergency shelter is provided for the homeless, fire victims, stranded individuals, and any Chemung County Resident who is in need of emergency shelter.
The shelter is located in unit 5 of the John W. Jones Court Complex, 624 Baldwin Street, Elmira, New York. There are 16 apartments available for use. Various churches, groups and organizations sponsor apartments and provide furnishings. An engraved plaque acknowledging the sponsor is mounted on each apartment door.
